From Marketing to Finance: Redefined Career Path with Courage and Curiosity – Tran Ha Linh – Alumna Class of 2024 06:58:10

When Hà Linh graduated with a Marketing degree in 2024, she made a decision that surprised many: to pursue a master’s degree in Finance in the UK. What seemed like an unexpected pivot was, in fact, a carefully considered step toward personal and professional growth. “The transition involved a steep learning curve,” Linh reflects. “I often had to teach myself new concepts from scratch, especially in technical areas like valuation and financial modeling.”

Linh’s early experiences sparked and led her to a new direction

The seeds of this transformation were planted during her early marketing internships at startups and SMEs. Witnessing firsthand how budget constraints affected marketing decisions opened her eyes to the strategic importance of financial planning. “We reused visuals that were nearly a year old – not as a creative choice, but because there was no budget for new ones,” she recalls. “That made me wonder how budget decisions are actually made. I started to realize that budgeting isn’t just about accounting – it’s a strategic tool for marketers and leaders alike.”

Her foundation at BUV played a crucial role in this evolution. Courses like Big Data and Measuring Success introduced her to data analysis and performance metrics, while mentors like Mr. João Fialho and Mr. Mike Perkins helped shape her understanding of finance’s strategic importance. “BUV’s business modules had a profound impact and were key in shaping my decision to transition into finance,” Linh explains. A particularly prophetic moment came during her International Foundation Programme when Mr. Mark Harris recognized her potential for finance – a prediction she would later fulfill.

The transition to finance studies wasn’t without its hurdles.

Entering a master’s program alongside classmates with extensive financial backgrounds initially felt daunting. “At first, I was overwhelmed,” Linh admits. “There was so much foundational knowledge in finance that I didn’t know – terms, models, even where to start.” However, she approached these obstacles with determination and adaptability, embracing practical tools like Excel and leveraging AI for concept clarification. Her marketing background, rather than being a limitation, offered fresh perspectives that enriched group discussions.

A crucial element of her success was the support system she built. Having her best friend join her in the UK provided emotional anchoring, while collaborative relationships with classmates created a nurturing learning environment. “Having her by my side made the start so much sweeter,” Linh shares. “We encouraged each other, explored together, and stayed grounded.” This experience taught her that success stems not just from individual effort but from building strong connections and learning to work through challenges collectively.

The journey transformed more than just her career path. Linh developed enhanced time management skills, adapted to new learning technologies, and discovered the value of both independence and interconnection. “This journey has shown me the value of both independence and connection,” she reflects. “I’ve learned that success isn’t just about personal effort – it’s also about being part of a team, building strong connections, and learning to collaborate through challenges.”

From refining her time management to adopting new learning tools, Linh’s journey has been one of transformation – inside and out.

To those contemplating similar bold moves, Linh offers a thoughtful message

“Be honest with yourself about your interests and strengths. It’s okay to start over. A career shift can feel daunting, but it’s also a chance to redefine yourself. Surround yourself with people who support your growth, and remember that every step – no matter how small – is progress toward the version of yourself you’re working to become.”

Her story stands as a testament to the power of curiosity and courage in career development. It shows that the path to professional fulfillment isn’t always linear – sometimes, the most rewarding journeys involve unexpected turns and the boldness to embrace change. “What helped shift my expectations was realizing that I wasn’t the only one struggling,” she shares. “My peers, even those with experience, were getting stuck at different points, too. We supported each other, and I realized I could contribute as well.”

BUV continues to celebrate alumni like Linh, whose stories inspire future graduates to pursue their authentic paths, regardless of where they may lead. Her journey exemplifies how combining academic excellence with personal courage can lead to remarkable transformations. Through her experience, she demonstrates that success often lies not in following predetermined paths but in having the courage to forge new ones.

Remember, you’re never alone on your path. There are always friends, mentors, and fellow alumni ready to help and support you through your challenges.
